2023 Weekend Hours

2023 Weekend Hours

The Belgian Heritage Center is now open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Regular hours are from 10:00 to 3:00.  Visits can also be arranged by appointment by emailing tourinfo@belgianheritagecenter.org or by calling 920-493-5969 at least three days in advance.  We look forward to your visit!

"Francois" is the story of Josie Wautlet's grandfather who immigrated to the US in 1856.  It is a journey back in time to the days of thick forests, backbreaking work and the Great Fire. THE HISTORY OF THE NORBERTINE FATHERS is presented by Father Timothy Shillcox. He serves as Director of Seminarians for the Abbey and teaches the history of the Norbertine Fathers. In their early years in Wisconsin they resided in the Old School House on the Belgian Heritage Center campus.

Join the Heritage Alliance of Door County at the Miller Art Museum Monday, June 19 at 11am to explore the 'Untold Stories' of Door County! Family friendly hands-on demonstrations and refreshments provided by Scaturos Baking Co & Cafe and Pinky Promise Coffee.

 

Christian Overland, Ruth & Hartley Barker Director and CEO of the Wisconsin Historical Society; Joel Kitchens, Member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from the 1st district; André Jacques, Member of the Wisconsin State Senate from the 1st district; and Mike Gallagher, U.S. Congressman Representing the 8th district of Wisconsin will be in attendance and give remarks on the importance of exploring the 'Untold Stories' of our local, regional, and larger communities. Meet organizations located throughout Door County who will be offering unique experinces during History Days and learn more about this week-long celebration of Door County history.

The first Belgians came to Northeast Wisconsin 170 years ago. Learn about their settlements as well as the story behind the unique St Mary of the Snows cemetery situated on the campus of the Belgian Heritage Center. Barb (Englebert) Chisholm will share these stories and more.

There will be a waffle breakfast on Sunday, June 25 at the Belgian Heritage Center. Breakfast includes waffles, trippe (a Belgian sausage), eggs and a beverage. Proceeds help support the Belgian Heritage Center.  Price is $12 for adults, $7 for children 4-12, free for children 3 and under.

Belgian Days Narrated Bus Tours

Belgian Days Narrated Bus Tours

Join BHC’s Historian Barb (Englebert) Chisholm for a one hour narrated bus tour in the largest Belgian settlement in the US. See roadside chapels, traditional Belgian houses, summer kitchens, cemeteries and where the first Kermiss was held. Hear stories about the lives and challenges faced by the early settlers. Tour participants will also receive a guided tour of the Belgian Heritage Center campus including exhibits, the votive chapel of St Roch and the restored Schoolhouse/Convent. Tours are $20 per person and leave from the Belgian Heritage Center at 9:00am and 10:30am on Saturday, July 8. Reservations are strongly encouraged as seating is limited. To reserve your seat call Julie at 920-619-6363, email contact@belgianheritagecenter.org or stop in at BHC during our weekend hours. Payment by cash, check and credit card is accepted. The tour is offered in cooperation with the Brussels Lions Club as part of their annual Belgian Days celebration on July 8 and 9. Tour proceeds benefit the Brussels Lions Club and BHC.

CATHOLIC DIOCESE ARCHIVES is presented by Olivia Wendt, Archivist at the Green Bay Diocese. She will share what and how church related historical documents are able to be found at the Diocese Archives.

Our BHC Kermiss will be a great event - silent auction; antique farm implements; raffles; Belgian pie, trippe, booyah, jutt, craft beer and Belgian fellowship.  The popular band Mad Cats will perform again this year. Please join us!  See special exhibits celebrating the 170th anniversary of the Aux Premiers Belge.

The Belgian Heritage Center is a perfect church-like setting for weddings and wakes/funerals. The Belgian Heritage Center is also available for rental for private events such as meetings, conferences and family reunions.
